The way Lyon saw it, he had two choices. He could uncover the outboard and move them farther downstream, which would only be a delaying tactic—or he could pack up just enough to get by with and move them deeper into the swamp. Another delaying tactic.

Either way, a move was imperative. If he was right about that plane, time was rapidly running out.

“Lyon? Is something wrong?”

That husky voice of hers caught him halfway across the clearing. He froze, but didn’t look back. Looking back was a luxury he couldn’t afford. He’d wasted enough time pulling on his pants and boots.

“Rain’s stopped,” he said gruffly. “Time to move camp.”

“Move what?” She sounded breathless. Getting dressed in a one-man pup tent wasn’t easy. Crawling ut, when your legs were as long as hers were, was no cinch, either.

Dammit, Lawless, don’t look back!

“You think the river’s going to rise that fast?”

He bent over to unlock the chest and grabbed his back for effect. His physical condition had improved far more these past few days than he’d let on. A smart man didn’t lay all his cards on the table. A smart man who wanted to survive learned how to use every advantage, and the element of surprise was always good.

Not that he thought Jasmine would, or even could, use his weakness against him, but after all these years the habit was too deeply ingrained to forget. Trust had killed many a good man.

“Lyon? Is it the rain? Are we going to be flooded out?”

“Nan, the water’s not going to rise,” he said gruffly. “All the same, it’s time to move on. I’ve got a better place in mind.”

He was going to shoot for the house. According to the woman in the tax office it was still standing at last report. He knew the approximate location. Even had a pretty good idea of how to get there, but if what he suspected turned out to be true, they were in for some rough going between here and there. Maybe he could leave her here to make her way back the best way she could.

No way. There was a sixty-forty chance, odds against him, that he’d been followed. What he couldn’t figure out was why they hadn’t come in after him right away instead of waiting a week. Unless finding someone who didn’t want to be found in the middle of several thousand acres of swamp wasn’t quite as easy as checking out a street address. Something he’d counted on when he’d chosen to look into old man Lawless’s legacy.

If he was right, then Jasmine would be in almost as much danger as he was. They wouldn’t think twice about using her to get at him and then offing her when they discovered she didn’t know anything.

It wasn’t going to happen.

When Lyon had first gone into law enforcement, protecting the public had been only an abstract concept. Now it didn’t seem quite so abstract. Not at all abstract, in fact.

After scraping away a layer of concealing debris, he whipped the tarp off the small outboard and battery.
